Malaysian Motor Insurance Pool (MMIP) has been asked to explain why the age requirement on its policy contradicts that of the Road Transport Department (JPJ) for the Goods Driver's Licence (GDL) and Public Service Vehicles (PSV) Licence.
According to JPJ, to obtain both licences, one has to be a Malaysian citizen or a permanent resident, at least 21 years of age, possess a full driving licence, has a clean bill of health certified by a doctor, and has attended the necessary courses and passed the necessary tests. However, two months ago, Mr Lee Kon Yew had problem with an insurance claim for a road accident that occurred two years ago.
Ng said the 73-year-old lorry driver’s claim for RM15,000 was denied because he was above the age limit of 65 stated in the MMIP policy. Approximately 30% of commercial and taxi drivers are above the age of 65. Part of the reason why lorry drivers are in this age range is because they have enough years of driving experience. Plus, they also have to 'cari makan', especially with the economy in its current state.
