Indonesian athletes who won medals at the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics continue to be rewarded for their achievements as the business sector comes on board to show its appreciation.
Tontowi Ahmad and Liliyana Natsir, who won gold in the badminton mixed doubles, and Sri Wahyuni Agustiani and Eko Yuli Irawan, who took silver in the weightlifting, have each received life and health insurance for a period of four years from a subsidiary of state-owned lender Bank Negara Indonesia (BNI).
The two gold medalists will enjoy free insurance worth Rp 1 billion ($75,000), while silver medalists Sri and Eko receive cover worth Rp 750 million from BNI Life.
The prizes were handed over during a "meet and greet" function held by the National Youth Champions Community (ABJ) at Century Park Hotel Jakarta on Sunday (28/08).
Badminton mixed doubles coach Richard Mainaky said the awards are well deserved, because the Olympic medalists promoted Indonesia to an international audience.
"This award is well deserved as compensation for their hard work to win gold medals for Indonesia," Richard said while addressing Tontowi and Liliyana.
BNI LIfe director Budi Tamoubolon said the prize was a token of the bank's appreciation for Indonesia's sporting heroes, while it also encourages other athletes from the country to follow their seniors' example.
"Hopefully they can motivate the next generation of athletes," Budi said. "The prizes can encourage young athletes to be even better than their predecessors."
The ABJ's Michael Umbas said: "Our potential to become a champion nation is strong and all of us have the obligation to develop that potential."
The insurance covers hospitalization resulting from injury and illness and it also includes a death benefit.
