The proposal to introduce an insurance protection scheme for farmers is expected to be finalised by the end of this month, said Agriculture and Agro-based Industry Minister Salahuddin Ayub.
He said several factors had to be considered before the scheme could be implemented with the aim of providing compensation to farmers who suffered losses due to natural disasters.
"The ministry feels the need for an insurance scheme because a sum of money could be paid to the farmers hit by unexpected natural disasters so as ease their burden. The disaster could happen once a year but the impact on the farmers is huge," he said after attending an Aidilfitri reception of the ministry here yesterday.
Salahuddin said the ministry had had discussions with Agro Bank on several mechanisms and to identify an interested insurance company to provide the scheme.
On another matter, he said the ministry was committed to eliminating any form of restrictions in the export of several agricultural products, including the durian and birds' nest, to China.
This matter would be discussed and resolved during the visit of Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad to China next month, he added.
