Muang Thai Life Scaling Back on Investment Linked Policies

Muang Thai Life Assurance is projected to maintain strong capitalization, solid operating performance, and steady expansion over the next two years. The Thai life insurer is expected to sustain its market expansion whilst navigating potential financial market volatility and rising healthcare c

Industry forecasts that MTL's prospective capital buffers will remain sufficient through 2028, bolstered by a gradual recovery in Thailand's broader economy. To strengthen profitability and maintain capital efficiency, MTL is prioritizing high-margin protection and health insurance products whilst scaling back on more capital-intensive, investment-linked policies.

The strategy is already showing results: in the first half of 2026, new business premiums grew 7% to $394.7m (THB13.3b), driving a 7% increase in profit after tax to $175.1m (THB5.9b).

MTL is also taking proactive steps to manage rising medical inflation by implementing claim pre-authorisation protocols and expanding its partner hospital network.Additionally, ongoing investments in technology and artificial intelligence are expected to broaden the insurer's customer reach and improve operational cost efficiency.

Financially, MTL's capitalisation is projected to stay well above S&P’s 99.8% confidence level over the next two years.

Under the TFRS 17 accounting standard, the insurer held approximately $2.04b (THB68.7b) in after-tax contractual service margin and risk adjustments as of year-end 2025—representing future shareholder profit value equal to roughly 51.4% of its shareholder equity.

The company maintains exceptional liquidity, supported by a well-diversified investment portfolio heavily weighted in high-quality government bonds and corporate debentures, ensuring ample liquidity for operational needs and claims payouts.
