A Malay woman is not related to a Chinese man and his daughter in Butterworth but they are as close as any family. Fatin Erlieyanie Hisham, 21, has been looking after Teh Tiang Meng and his mentally-challenged daughter Khar Hoon, 48, since being made aware of their plight about a year ago.
Teh, 75, said Fatin Erlieyanie had accompanied her employer, who was his niece, to visit him and his late wife in February last year. Fatin Erlieyanie then volunteered to help her employer look after Tiang Meng and his family.
Besides visiting the family regularly, Fatin Erlieyanie would also take them to the hospital for treatment and follow-ups. He said he was very touched when Fatin Erlieyanie accompanied him and his daughter, who is suffering from diabetes, for days during his late wife’s funeral ceremony last month.
Fatin Erlieyanie said the Teh family was very kind and nice. “They are like my family members. I am very happy to be with them,” she said. She added that her own family members were very supportive of her ties with the Teh family.
