The sale and promotion of Kangen water in Malaysia is permitted as long as it adheres to the standards set by the Health Ministry.
Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr S. Subramaniam said that not only must the product be licensed, but sellers of Kangen water must also have a separate licence.
“For sales and promotion to happen, sellers and their products must be in compliance with the Food Act 1983 and the Food Regulations 1985.
“As long as all the laws are adhered to and the required licence has been issued, the water can be sold,” he said in reply to a question by Dr Siti Mariah Mahmud (Amanah - Kota Raja) in Parliament on Tuesday.
An alkaline filtered water, Kangen water had last year made headlines after outrageous claims that it was a “miracle water” that could allegedly treat 150 chronic illnesses.
In a follow-up question, Datuk Dr Noor Azmi Ghazali (BN - Bagan Serai) raised concerns that companies advertising Kangen water as containing healing properties were misleading the public.
To that, Dr Subramaniam said action could be taken against false and misleading advertisers as well.
“The ministry has taken action against three individuals this year over this matter.
“Any advertisements claiming this water has healing properties are misleading people and that contravenes existing laws,” he said.
