Police have detained a 39-year-old man and 36-year-old woman, believed to be siblings, for allegedly abusing their Indonesian maid in Taman Kota Permai here.
Central Seberang Prai OCPD Asst Comm Nik Ros Azhan Nik Abdul Hamid said the victim is a 21-year-old woman from Medan, Indonesia.
He said that a police report was lodged by Por Cheng Han, 29, the personal assistant of Bukit Mertajam MP Steven Sim.
"He received an alert from a journalist on Saturday morning, went to the house in Medan Kota Permai 2 and found the victim outside the house.
"After confronting the house owner, a woman in her 60s, Poh lodged a police report," he said.
ACP Nik Ros said that man and the woman, the maid's employers, brought her to the Bandar Perda police station where they surrendered later on Saturday night.
"There was swelling on the victim's head and face, as well as other injuries on her arms and legs," he said.
ACP Nik Ros said attempts to record the maid's statement were unsuccessful as she was still in fear.
"We have sent her to the Bukit Mertajam Hospital for a check-up," he said.
The couple has been remanded for four days until Feb 14 for investigations under Section 324 of the Penal Code for causing hurt.
