MySalam, a national insurance protection scheme for the lower-income group, has been officially launched by Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad. The Prime Minister said the insurance scheme is set to benefit some 3.69 million households in the “B40” category.
“Through this scheme, the federal government intends to help the B40 group to cope financially when they are admitted in a government hospital or are affected by one of the 36 critical illnesses that are covered.
“For those in the B40 category, especially those who are working on their own or those who earn daily income, this insurance claim will provide temporary relief and help them with their daily spendings whilst receiving medical treatment,” said Dr Mahathir in his speech at the launch of the MySalam insurance scheme.
The scheme was first announced during the Budget 2019 presentation, with an initial fund size of RM2bil contributed by insurance company Great Eastern.
Recipients of the government's Bantuan Sara Hidup Rakyat 2019 (BSHR) between the ages of 18 and 55 are eligible for the scheme.
The 36 critical illnesses covered by the scheme includes cancer, heart attack and Alzheimer's. Recipients will receive a one-off payment of RM8,000 if they are diagnosed with one of the illnesses.
They will also receive daily payments of RM50 up to 14 days as income replacement in the event of hospitalisation. The scheme takes effect from Jan 1, 2019 and recipients can make their claims beginning March 1.
Also present at the launch event were Finance Minister Lim Guan Eng and Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr Dzulkefly Ahmad.
