Several business owners, especially in the Klang Valley, have a selfish habit of placing dustbins, chairs, tyres and even flowerpots to reserve parking bays. In Petaling Jaya, some business owners even paint fake reserved parking bays and cheat Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ), or so I was told by the mayor Datuk Mohd Azizi Mohd Zain.
A council reserved parking bay costs RM400 monthly, and the council has monthly RM100 parking passes too. All rented council bays must be open to the public after 6.30pm. In Section 14, Petaling Jaya, some food truck owners hog the bays in the late evening, and return to the same bay the next morning.
At a recent full board meeting, councillors were exchanging views on whether the rate for council parking bays should be increased from the current 60 sen per hour to free up the bays.
Petaling Jaya’s population is undeniably growing and now reaching almost 900,000 residents; let’s not forget the influx of people who transit this city for work and other matters. Technically, we need more parking bays.
As for the council, please carry out more enforcement to ensure no business units are hogging council bays.
