Cold Storage Closing Down PJ Branch


Image result for cold storage supermarketA landmark supermarket in Petaling Jaya is closing down, as it ceases operations in other parts of the Klang Valley. Cold Storage, a premium-brand supermarket owned by Giant hypermarket owners GCH Retail (M) Sdn Bhd, will be shutting down its branch in Section 14 where it has been operating for decades. The outlet in Section 14 has started a closing-down sale on Saturday, but “shelves were already practically empty by 5pm on the same day.  

Cold Storage currently has seven stores nationwide, and it is understood that several other outlets in the Klang Valley have been replaced. This year alone, GCH has closed 13 stores comprising Giant and Cold Storage outlets.

Jaya Supermarket which was built in 1974 was the pioneer shopping centre in Petaling Jaya, with Cold Storage which has been in business in Malaysia since 1963 operating an outlet in this building sometime before 1980 before later branding it as Giant supermarket.

Cold Storage comes under GCH Retail (M) Sdn Bhd which also operates several other brands including Giant supermarket and hypermarket chain, noting that GCH had 147 outlets locally in 2014 but to date has less than 100 supermarkets and hypermarkets.
