Asuransi Allianz Life Indonesia, a local unit of Munich-based insurance giant Allianz, filed a civil complaint against lawyer Alvin Lim for damaging the insurer's reputation, the company said in a statement on Monday (06/11).
Alvin represents Ifranius Algadri and Indah Goena Nanda, both Allianz Life customers who in September pressed criminal charges against former executives at the company for failing to reimburse their insurance claims.
"Allianz suspects there is a group of people using similar ways to deceive and gain benefits from insurance policies and have formally reported these cases to [the Jakarta Police]," the insurer said in the statement.
Allianz Life said Alvin and his associates were responsible for "negative and non-factual accusations which have harmed the reputation of Allianz Life."
The criminal charges against Allianz Life executives — Joachim Wessling, a former president director of Allianz Indonesia, and Yuliana Firmansyah, a former claim manager at the company — drew public attention because similar consumer protection disputes are often settled through the country's civil court system.
Alvin said at the time that Allianz Life came up with an additional policy requirement not included in his customers' original contracts. However, Allianz responded, saying that the requirement was necessary as the insurer "observed irregular patterns in the claims being submitted within a relatively short period."
"Until today, Allianz Life maintains our position of not paying the disputed claims to Ifranius Algadri and Indah Goena Nanda, as these claims did not meet the prevailing terms of their insurance contracts," Allianz said in a statement.
The insurer also said that Joachim and Yuliana have yet to be named as suspects, nor are they banned from travelling abroad.
