Sarawak PKR chairman Baru Bian has unleashed a sharp critique of Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka (DBP)’s proposal to impose a fine of RM1,000 over the use of incorrect Bahasa Malaysia.
Calling DBP’s proposal immature, ill-conceived, and a waste of time and resources, Baru said that the fine will end up being a punitive action, rather than an educational one.
The Ba’ Kelalan state assemblyman added that the proposed fines for the improper use of Bahasa Malaysia was also be a violation of the Federal Constitution. Baru also brought up the fluidity of language as another important point against the proposed fines.
A report by Chinese daily Nanyang Siang Pau, quoted a source as saying that DBP would be empowered to hand out the fines if the amendments to the National Language Act 1963 and Education Act 1996 are passed in Parliament. DBP director-general Abdul Adzis Abas said the government had suggested empowering DBP to take action against the improper use of Bahasa Malaysia, including in online advertisements.
