Opposition leader Tsai Ing-wen won Taiwan’s presidency on Saturday, with her Democratic Progressive party also hoping to secure a majority in the legislature for the first time in its history in a landslide election that will disturb Beijing.
Ms Tsai was predicted by local TV stations to have secured around 60 per cent of the vote, compared to around 30 per cent for Mr Chu. When she is inaugurated in May, Ms Tsai will become Taiwan’s first female president as well as the one of the first women to be elected leader of an Asian nation without the help of family connections.
