A 42-year-old housewife broke down upon hearing she was disallowed bail after being charged with murdering her Indonesian maid and abusing her second maid, a Cambodian, at two separate courts here today.
Chan Lay Lee was charged with murdering Zubaedah, 38, at her bungalow at 35 Lebuhraya Jelutong between 11am and 4.45pm on Feb 26 and causing grievous hurt to a Cambodian woman, Anad, 22, at the same place between July 2016 and Feb 25 of this year.
In the first case heard at the Sessions Court, Chan was accused of grievously hurting the Cambodian with a metal pipe at her home in Jelutong, Penang. Chan faces a maximum of 20 years imprisonment and whipping or both if found guilty under Section 326 of the Penal Code.
Deputy Public Prosecutor Nurul Huda Idris prosecuted while Chan was represented by Ruebankumar Asokan. Sessions Court judge Irwan Suaibon set May 11 for case management and denied the accused bail.
In the second case heard at the Magistrate’s Court, Chan was accused of murdering her Indonesian maid at her home. Magistrate Mohd Amin Shahul Hamid set May 11 for case management. Deputy Public Prosecutor Nurul Fatin Hussin prosecuted while Ruebankumar appeared for Chan.
Upon hearing that no bail was allowed, Chan broke down as she was led out by court bailiffs. Her husband tried to calm her down. An elderly woman, believed to be Chan’s mother, was also there to console her.
