Traditional Chinese pastry shop Fung Wong Biscuits Enterprise marked the Dragon Boat Festival this year with the generous gesture of giving away 1,000 dumplings to visitors of Petaling Street, Kuala Lumpur. It took less than an hour for all the dumplings to be snapped up.
Visitors were seen forming a long line that stretched from the shop in Jalan Hang Lekir to Jalan Sultan early in the morning.
The century-old brand’s fourth-generation owner, Melvin Chan, said the event was held for the fourth year.
“Through this event, we hope to remind people of the importance of Chinese traditions and festivals. We also want to ensure that these traditions will continue on,” he said.
One of the sponsors for the dumplings, Datuk Yap Yit Leong said the event could boost tourism in the area.
“This can attract more tourists here to boost economy,” he said, adding that the event also aimed to preserve such traditions among the local community.
Visitors who lined up for the dumplings were given a voucher to claim. They received a dumpling, a cookie, two muffins, a soursop drink and ang pow in a goodie bag.
Tourists were also seen gathered outside the shop and enjoyed the local delights.
However, some visitors who lined up had to go home empty-handed as the dumplings were all distributed.
