When you see a fire, the first thing you need to do is call the Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM), and then maybe think about the live video that you might be itching to take.
This is what the Terengganu JBPM director Azlimin Mat Noor is asking of the public that are becoming obsessed to upload live videos of fires on social media.
He noted that this behaviour not only delay rescue efforts but also could invite untoward incidents, which had previously happened where the JBPM only knew about the fire incident through a live video but no one had contacted them.
"If the distress call is received late just because people want to upload the live video (of the fire) on Facebook first, the possibility of the fire to spread and go out of control is even larger.
“If we get the call early maybe the fire department can immediately extinguish the fire before it spreads, compared to trying to extinguishing it fire when it becomes out of control,” he said, as reported by Bernama.
As such, if you witness a fire, please perform your civic duty by calling the relevant authorities before updating your social media because not only material items could be lost, but lives as well.
