THE Self Employment Social Security Scheme for taxi and rented car drivers by the Social Security Organisation (Socso) has been met with lukewarm response, said its deputy chief executive officer (corporate) Datin Azlaily Abd Rahman.
“Only 2,758 drivers nationwide have registered under this scheme between June 1 and Dec 31 last year and out of that number, only 2,337 were paying their contributions.”
She said the scheme was introduced last June to provide protections to taxi and rented car drivers as well as Grab and Uber drivers.
“Under the scheme, this self-employed group would be protected from unwanted incidents at work such as occupational disease, accidents at work and others.
Azlaily added that this showed that the scheme would provide a positive outcome to the driver.
“The contribution to the scheme is only about RM157 a year. It is much cheaper than any other scheme provided by private companies.
“I hope that more taxi, Grab and Uber drivers will come forward and register for the scheme,” she said.
On another note, Azlaily said Socso spent over RM68mil on various benefits such as temporary disablement and permanent disablement benefits on 22,056 cases in the country last year.
“We collected about RM3.5bil in contributions from 435,801 employers to provide protection to 6.8 million members.”
At the CNY celebration, Azlaily handed over financial benefits totalling RM203,509.14 to 10 beneficiaries.
Among them were four people who also received medical supplies such as a wheelchair, diapers, walking stick and walking frame.
She also presented 40 hampers and red packets to single mothers and their children under their corporate social responsibility effort.
Also present were state Socso director Othman Nordin, Socso George Town office manager Shaharuddin Waled and Socso Kulim office manager Tunku Shahrin Tunku Salehan.
