Touts working for illegal taxi drivers at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport and KLIA2 are enlisting foreigners as "lookouts" to alert them of any Road Transport Department (JPJ) enforcement efforts.
JPJ director-general Datuk Seri Shaharuddin Khalid said these foreigners were paid a small fee to "spy" on enforcement officers while the touts are busy hounding potential passengers.
"This hinders our operations to eradicate taxi touts at the country's entry points. Despite this, we managed to nab 10 local men who worked as touts in a three-day operation beginning last Sunday at both airports," he told a press conference regarding the "Operasi Khas Ulat Teksi" at KLIA on Wednesday.
He said the touts were picked up at arrival halls, and their main "targets" were Arabian tourists.
It is learnt the touts' modus operandi is telling would-be passengers that their fares are lower than car rental services which operate legally at the airports.
"These touts offer rates ranging from RM80 to RM100 to Kuala Lumpur-bound passengers and those arriving in the country for the first time will usually be attracted by the offer, unaware that the actual fare is between RM65 and RM80.
"Worse, some passengers will sometimes be required to pay up to US$100 (RM393) when they arrive at their destination," he said.
He said the special operation would be extended to airports in Penang and Johor.
