The Consumers’ Association of Penang (CAP) is urging the Government to impose tougher penalties against errant drivers who disregard road safety laws and endanger other road users.
Its president S.M. Mohamed Idris said errant drivers who commit speeding, tail-gating and dangerous overtaking should be punished under Section 42 of the Road Transport Act 1987 which carries a maximum jail term of five years.
“It is obvious that issuing summonses against the offenders is not working as it fails to reduce the number of accidents.
“Thus, the Government must impose stringent penalties against the offenders,” he said yesterday.
“This form of punishment has been practised successfully in Singapore which has a substantial impact in deterring litterbugs and reducing incidences of littering,” he said.
During Ops Selamat 12 held from Feb 9 to Feb 23 this year, motorcyclists topped the fatality rate with 150 deaths, followed by car owners (46), pedestrians (13), lorry drivers (5), van users (5), cyclists and buses (1), and other users (5).
